ABOUT THIS PAINTING
During the summer of 2009 a fellow artist and I wandered up to northern New Mexico to have a look at Shiprock near Farmington and the Four Corners (where Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico meet). These big rocks are quite something popping up out of the desert. And it does look like a ship on a great sea of sand. And we didn't encounter a soul. I took pictures from every which way knowing I would put it to paint when I got the chance.
When we left we headed on into Arizona to Canyon de Chelly. As I often do I looked back through the rear window to make sure I didn't miss anything spectacular. Sure enough, I saw something spectacular and yelled to RJ to stop the truck.
It later became this painting. A lot of time and a good many layers of paint went into getting all the rocks placed just as they were from that great vantage point. And then there was that great desert cloud ......
