Description
Lander 2000 actually began as a small sketch done on location in the summer of '98, followed by numerous photographs to insure accuracy. The studio painting was completed in my California studio during that odd week between Christmas and the New Year 2000 -- a true Y2K painting.
My point of observation actually put me on a small hill in a parking lot overlooking the town -- the McDonald's parking lot. Lander has finally succumbed -- though perhaps less than most -- to the relentless march of consumerist mediocrity which pervades much of America. Nevertheless, I enjoyed having a Big Mac when breaking for lunch.
In spite of this progression, Lander STILL embodies a certain uniqueness which can be identified with what has become the American West. Lander is NOT western for the sake of being western. Lander is not cute postcard western (although it makes a damn nice postcard -- available at the Inn at Lander overlooking Main Street).
Lander's "westness" comes from its juxtaposition within the great western sweep of landscape where the American prairie meets the Rockies.
